I haven't read Tweeters for over a week so this may have already been
posted. I'm hoping that someone out there in our birding community knows of
someone in eastern Washington that can check out this bird and possibly get
it into rehab. On our way home from Sandpoint, Idaho south and west across
eastern WA yesterday approximately a half mile east of mile marker 83 on Hwy
28 between Odessa and Soap Lake we saw a gorgeous hawk sitting on the cement
foundation surrounding a windmill about 200' off the south side of the road.
It appeared to have an injured shoulder or wing from the way it was held and
unable or reluctant to change it's body position. It seemed alarmed with
our getting out of the car for so we didn't approach the windmill even tho'
there appears to be a way to drive directly into it. We just drove away
rather than causing it to injure itself further. As you can tell, we're not
experts and couldn't make a positive ID with the brief looks we had. At
first we thought it was an immature eagle but the coloring seemed too light
(lots of brown and white splotching on the back, white on the chest, and
possibly some striping on or above the eye plus the beak didn't look large
enough for an eagle). It may have been a redtail hawk but didn't "look"
right to me. I've checked my books and they haven't helped. If anyone
