I finally got home and tallied the results of the annual
Washington Audubon Memorial Day Weekend Wenas Campout. Only 109 species
were seen during the three day event which is the lowest number in over a
decade. The birds were not back on breeding territory and small flocks of
Yellow-rumped Warblers and Western Tanagers were being encountered at the
lower elevations. A visit to the higher elevations of Bald Mountain
provided few birds and much lingering snow. The wildflowers at the 6,500
elevation were just beginning to show while the best displays were at
about 4,000' where the rocky prairies were carpeted with Bitterroot.
The only unusual species that I encountered was an EASTERN PHOEBE
that Richard Hamby and I found working the open grasslands along Wenas
Creek on Saturday, May 27. A check the next day failed to relocate this
bird.
