It was a very pleasant afternoon, partly cloudy. The breeze
felt good in the 70ish temperature, but it did ruffle the
leaves a lot, making it more difficult to spot bird
movement. The birds were very active, much birdsong in the
air.

Highlights were several Swainson's Thrushes, several Hermit
Thrushes, Cedar Waxwings, lots of Yellow Warblers, and one
Myrtle Yellow-rumped Warbler. There was only one male
Northern Harrier. A pair of Killdeer flying. The only
sparrows I saw were Song Sparrows.

For years I've been hearing a call around Wiley and the
woods near my house that sounds like the first half of a
wolf whistle without seeing the bird making it. Last week I
was imitating the call and a Hermit Thrush popped out and
made a similar call, though it sounded like it choked it off
when it saw me. In this trip around Wiley I heard probably
six different variations on this call. I now think it's both
the Swainson's and the Hermit Thrushes.

A reminder: at some point portions of the dike will be
removed and this delightful place will not be the same. The
plan is to make another circular trail but I fear it won't
be nearly as nice. So get out there and enjoy it while it's
still available.
