On Saturday (6/3/06), the Cottets and Kim Thorburn,
and I made a pre-dawn attempt to see Short-eared Owls
along the CRP fields along Hwy 21 in northern Adams
County. Unfortunately, we didn't see any this time.

In Rocky Coulee (Adams County), there were several
SAGE THRASHERs up and singing. When the sun rose, a
chorus of BREWER'S SPARROWs seemed to emanate from
every other sagebrush shrub. However, we did not
detect any Sage Sparrows that have been reported here
in the past. Several SWAINSON'S HAWKs were in the
vicinity.

In southern Lincoln County, Rocky Ford on Crab Creek
disappoinedt us with it's lack of warblers,
flycatchers, or vireos. In fact, thete weren't any
migrants present.

In the Harrington Cemetery, a pair of OLIVE-SIDED
FLYCATCHERs greeted us, and a Townsend's Warbler sang
a couple of times. Davenport Cemetery held a first
year male AMERICAN REDSTART, Nashville Warbler, Cedar
Waxwings, Swainson's Thrush, Great Horned Owl,
Ruby-crowned Kinglet, and Yellow-rumped Warbler.The
redstart is a tough bird for Lincoln County and it was
a county lifer for me.

On a abandoned farmhouse on the southwest side of
Mohler, we found several Willow Flycatchers, House
Wren, Bullock's Oriole, Warbling Vireo, and Western
Wood Pewee.

Cottonwood Creek gave us a singing Gray Catbird and a
chat as well as a GRAY FLYCATCHER. Bank Swallows were
flying around the gravel pit. On the grassy plateau,
Vesper & Savannah Sparrows, and
GRASSHOPPER SPARROWs were conveniently conspicuous.

Our most productive area of the day was Hawk Creek
Canyon. After we ran into Jim Acton, he called in a
VEERY and a YELLOW-BREASTED CHAT. Both of these
notorious skulkers gave us great views. As Jim called
in the chat, a pair of GOLDEN EAGLEs soared overhead.
At the same time, an impressive sundog lit up large
area of the sky with a beautiful rainbow effect.

As we continued down Hawk Creek Road, we saw GRAY
CATBIRD, Black-headed Grosbeak, LAZULI BUNTING, Yellow
Warbler, Cooper's Hawk. At Hawk Creek Falls, we saw a
DIPPER, California Gulls, Belted Kingfisher, and
Spotted Sandpiper. Finally, Reardan Audubon Lake held
Eared Grebes, coots, Canvasback, Redhead,
Yellow-headed Blackbird, Marsh Wren, and Black-necked
Stilt.
