For most of the last week, I've had the privilege to observe a red-breasted sapsucker constructing a nest hole. However, I find myself lacking in knowledge about this species. Despite referencing several guides, I have been unable to observe which bird is the male and female. The male has drummed on the conveniently located port-a-potti. However, when the 2 birds are present I can't discern the color difference. Does anyone have any helpful hints? Also, is it only the male that constructs the nesting hole? Any info would be appreciated. Thanks. This is a great tree for woodpeckers (small cottonwood that's dead about two-thirds down from the top), I believe that a downy woodpecker is occupying the penthouse hole. The male downy went crazy the other day dive bombing and screaming at a starling the perched and preened for a bit on a branch near the top of the tree.
