Subject: [Tweeters] Shilshole Martin Boxes

Someone had asked a week or two ago why the martin boxes at Kevin Li's
Shilshole colony are plugged. Don't know if this already got answered,
but it's because the starlings and sparrows love to take them over.
Kevin had trouble keeping them out, so he finally decided to put up more
gourds (which the martins like but the invasives do not) and keep the
old boxes plugged up. If anyone is there and notices that there seem to
be more martin pairs than gourds, please drop me an e-mail and we (a
group of us are trying to keep Kevin's colonies going) will put up more
gourds.

Also, I was wondering if any of the tweeters regulars has birded at the
Evans Creek Natural Area (a.k.a. Evans Creek Park) in Redmond? It's
south of Union Hill Road on 196th Avenue N.E. There don't appear to be
many trails through this area, but I was out there this morning and was
amazed at the number of bird songs I could hear from the road (and
couldn't ID most of them because I am a novice bird watcher). I would
love to see a species list from someone who knows what they are seeing
and hearing as far as birds. There are a lot of large snags in this
area with evidence of woodpeckers at work, and at least two species of
swallows were taking advantage of all the insects over the giant wetland
area around the snags.
