Bob and Tweeters,

Your theory that Eurasian Collared-Doves have spread to Loomis
from the Similkameen Valley of BC sounds very likely. There is an
established population of at least 200 birds centered around
Keremeos and Cawston in BC. They may well have spread
south through Nighthawk and vicinity as far as Loomis. Oddly, they
are rarely ever reported in the main Okanagan/Okanogan Valley
around Oliver, Osoyoos, and Oroville. However, at the rate at which
they are popping up in other parts of eastern WA, it may be only
a few years until they are a common permanent resident in the
entire area.

While leading a tour recently, we found calling and displaying Eurasian
Collared-Doves in Loomis (June 4). There appeared to be at least 4 to
5 birds, and lots of vocalizing and flight displays right along the main
road through town. Perhaps these have arrived from the established B.C.
population?
