Subject: [Tweeters] Hairy Woodpecker question from Nova Scotia

I just heard from someone in Nova Scotia who thinks she might have a
Northwest Coast-type Hairy Woodpecker coming to her feeders, based on
the dingy color of its back and underparts. I suggested that she
contact an expert in her area, but she sent me a bunch of photos. I
told her that, aside from the unlikelihood of one of our non-migratory
birds making it that far, it looks to me like the bird has too much
white spotting on the wings to be of our local subspecies. But I'm not
a woodpecker expert, so I said I would post a query here. If any of you
are interested in looking at the photos and weighing in, I'll be glad to
forward the photos to you.
