I took a quick trip this morning to the spot where Paul Hicks found this bird, and it popped out of the Scotch Broom almost immediately and sat on the wire singing its heart out. But it's not 0.8 mi north of the highway, only about 0.4 mi, at the first gravel road to the east. A big white sign by the mailbox says "Quist." I was hoping for some of the other good birds Paul mentioned, but there was very little around. Pretty wet today.

Tweets,
The Clay-colored Sparrow was present in the same location on Tuesday
morning: ~2 miles W of Tenino on Melville St off Old Hwy 99, in the extreme
NW corner of Rock Prairie. The bird does venture eastward down the gravel
side road along the firs, power lines, and Scotch Broom. A previous bird of
the early 90s in n. Thurston continued to sing (though less heartily) into
the first week of July.
Good birding!
