Kitsap Wildflowers, Butterflies, and More:

With all the talk about Nighthawks I'd like to invite everyone (especially
Seattle area Tweeters) to come with me on a trip to see one of their
remaining strongholds in the Puget Trough along with the other birds, plants
and other animals there. (We may or may not see any Nighthawks) There are
still spaces to join me on my Kitsap Wildflowers, Butterflies, and More trip
this coming Saturday June 24th, on a trip that I?m leading through Seward
Park, Camp Long and the Seattle Parks dept.:

Take a step back in time to see some of the members of the savannah and
conifer and Garry Oak woodlands that once dominated much of the Puget Trough
lowlands that is now covered with lawns, pavement and buildings, pastures
and farms. We?ll likely see the magnificent large orange and silver flecked
Great Spangled Fritillary butterflies that as caterpillars recently finished
feeding on the Long-spurred Violets that may still adorn the meadows with
their beautiful blooms. Will the Pale Swallowtails be nectaring on the
taller, showier native form there of Self-heal - Prunella vulgaris ssp.
lanceolata)? Will the relatively rare Senecio macounii - Puget Butterweed
be blooming yet and will any butterflies be nectaring on it? Will we find
the Harsh Indian Paintbrushes (Castilleja hispida) covered with flaming
scarlet-orange paint? Will the Nighthawks be flying during the day making
their distinct buzzy call notes? Will the Alligator Lizards and Garter
Snakes be bathing in sun to let us admire their bathing beauty bodies? Will
tiny tailless toad-lets be hopping from their lacustran larval
living-quarters yet? I have dreams of helping bring Seward and Lincoln
Parks and Camp Long back to a state a bit closer to what this area still
looks like today. Come see what it might look like! If you would like to
join in on the project of bringing back some of the elements of the
historical Garry Oak Savannah ecosystem at Seward this would be an
especially good trip to come on.
