Looks like several birders were at the Wilson's Creek site and also saw
Ferruginous Hawks in the past few days. The buffy bib and distinct eye
stripe of recently fledged Ferruginous Hawks were field marks that I saw
well, and did not realize they were typical of this species until I
consulted my Wheeler and Clark references.
I failed to mention that we had a fly-by view of a single swan while we
were at the overlook trying to find Tricolored Blackbirds. It was silent
in flight, and I did not get a good enough look to make a definitive
call on species. My guess would be Trumpeter based on size. Something of
an unusual sighting in the summer here.
