Barred Owls now have fledged and flying young about, though the young are
not yet capable of hunting on their own. The adults are pressed hard now
to keep them fed - sort of like teenagers - and will be out actively
hunting at all hours. Interesting behavior is that the small birds that
are all over the adults now will leave the juveniles alone. It is like
they know who the threat is. Juveniles can easily be detected now, as they
give an incessant, slightly rising, "Pssssst!" call. I find it
irritating, but I think it is supposed to stimulate the adults into
feeding the young.

I suspect that I now have over 50 Barred Owls on Bainbridge Island. Kind
of impressive, in that they weren't here 15 years ago.
