Bird Alert for Friday, June 23, 2006, sponsored in part by the Wild

RARE BIRD ALERT for EASTERN PHOEBE and ALDER
FLYCATCHER. Both of these birds were last reported on June 20;
if you have further sightings, please leave a message on the RBA.


Sightings for Friday, June 23, 2006

At the lagoon near the tip of the Tsawwassen ferry jetty in Delta,
there were at least 6 adult BLACK OYSTERCATCHERS and
2 chicks.


Sightings for Thursday, June 22

At Iona Island in Richmond, a WESTERN KINGBIRD and an OSPREY
were seen, as well as several PURPLE MARTINS at the nest boxes
on the North Arm of the Fraser River.

At the Reifel Bird Sanctuary in Delta, 4 unseasonable DUNLIN and 2
GREATER YELLOWLEGS were reported.

A WESTERN KINGBIRD was seen at the Maplewood Conservation Area
in North Vancouver.


Sightings for Wednesday, June 21

At the Reifel Bird Sanctuary, an OSPREY and a surprising 51
BLACK-BELLIED PLOVERS were seen.

At Crescent Park in Surrey, birds seen included a BARRED OWL and
a YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLER.

In North Langley, in the 20400 block of 97A Avenue, 3 COMMON
NIGHTHAWKS were seen.


Sightings for Tuesday, June 20

At Surrey Lake Park on 152nd Street in Surrey, the EASTERN PHOEBE
at the bridge next to the parking lot and the ALDER FLYCATCHER
just southeast of the park were both reported. Also here were a
BULLOCK'S ORIOLE and at least 40 BLACK SWIFTS.

At the Reifel Bird Sanctuary, a TUNDRA SWAN and a PEREGRINE
FALCON were both quite unusual for the time of year.


Sightings for Monday, June 19

The EASTERN PHOEBE was seen again at Surrey Lake Park, but
there was no report of the ALDER FLYCATCHER.

A BRANT on the beach in White Rock was unusual.

At the Reifel Bird Sanctuary, 60 CASPIAN TERNS were seen.

At Crescent Park in Surrey, a family of 4 BARRED OWLS, one adult
and 3 fledglings, were observed at length.


Sightings for Sunday, June 18

The EASTERN PHOEBE continues at the bridge near the entrance to
Surrey Lake Park along 152nd St just north of 72nd Ave, Surrey. There
were no reports today of the ALDER FLYCATCHER just east of
the park.

Along the beach at White Rock, there were noteworthy summer
sightings of several waterbirds including 4 COMMON LOONS,
122 WESTERN GREBES, a RED-NECKED GREBE, and 130
BONAPARTE'S GULLS.

At the Reifel Bird Sanctuary in Delta, 2 GREATER WHITE-FRONTED
GEESE were seen.


Sightings for Saturday, June 17

The EASTERN PHOEBE and the ALDER FLYCATCHER were
both reported again by several observers from Surrey Lake
Park in Surrey.

At the Roberts Bank jetty in Delta, at least 200 GREAT BLUE HERONS
and 16 CASPIAN TERNS were seen.


Sightings for Friday, June 16

The EASTERN PHOEBE continues at the bridge near the entrance to
Surrey Lake Park, and the ALDER FLYCATCHER just to the southeast
of the park.


Sightings for Thursday, June 15

The ALDER FLYCATCHER was still singing just to the southeast
of Surrey Lake Park, off 152nd Street in Surrey, and an EASTERN
PHOEBE was found at the bridge right at the park entrance, next
to the parking area. Both birds were photographed and tape-recorded
by several observers.

Also seen at Surrey Lake Park were a GREEN HERON, 12 BLACK
SWIFTS, a singing RED-EYED VIREO, and 2 MOURNING DOVES.


Sightings for Wednesday, June 14

A singing ALDER FLYCATCHER was discovered in a row of
trees just southeast of Surrey Lake Park, off 152nd Street near
76th Avenue in Surrey.

Three COMMON NIGHTHAWKS were noted in the Blueridge district
of North Vancouver, east of the Seymour River.


Sightings for Tuesday, June 13

The BLACK-THROATED SPARROW was relocated briefly near the
entrance to the Forensic Institute at Colony Farm Park in Coquitlam.
