Just a thought:

Since Nighthawks are said to favor clearcuts in western Washington, maybe the
increasing number of sightings is partly due to an increase in the acreage of
deforestation.

Before there were spy satelites, CIA bird watchers were said to have monitored
migrating birds fron Siberia, in order to determine habitat alteration.
