Subject: [Tweeters] My first owl!

I must have the silliest life list of anyone in King County; I have been
able to list all sorts of impossible warblers and rarely seen pelagic
birds, mostly thanks to Audubon field trips, yet have had ridiculous
gaps such as Brown Creeper and Band-Tailed Pigeon, both of which I only
saw for the first time last year, when I wasn't looking for them, of
course. Perhaps the worst part was that I'd never seen an owl in the
wild--sheesh, even people who don't watch birds have seen owls!

Yesterday evening I was sitting on my deck around 9 p.m. when a huge
white bird rose out of the marsh behind our house, circled near enough
for me to see its gorgeous owly face, then flew through our cedars and
away. It returned ten minutes later, and from various alarmed squeaks I
heard thereafter, I assume it was successfully catching little furry
critters to eat. It was a Barn Owl. I am still thrilling over it!
