I subscribe to the Tweeters Digest and would like to encourage people to
be aware of a critical issue involving a wetland and its bird
populations in the Mill Creek area.

Below is a copy of a letter I wrote to the manager of this project -
time-critical! - anyone care to chime in and support the wetland?

Regarding a 96 lot subdivision on 58.8 acres along the treeline on the
West side of a wetland park called North Creek at the end of 9th. I
strongly encourage you to re-think this project. Our natural areas that
sustain rapidly disappearing wildlife are being gobbled up by rampant
development and to intrude on such a rich park area in favor of this new
subdivision is short-sighted and disastrous for the bird populations in
the area.

There is a heron rookery that is adjacent to the new subdivision. It's
the treeline directly behind it that's at risk, and the fear is that the
encroachment as well as short term construction disruption will be the
factor that drives them out. Their trees, apparently, will remain.

The re-tailed hawk habitat, any forest bird habitat (including a
Pileated Woodpecker - WDFW State Species of Concern), the trees
themselves are all at great risk of disappearing very soon due to new
subdivision along a public park.

Even if all you are concerned with is the human populations, consider
the serenity of the boardwalk. In this busy world, the new residents of
the planned subdivision would appreciate the beauty and quiet of a
wetland park. I have walked this area and met with local residents who
do so regularly and all are concerned that we will lose a valuable human
resource as well as the wildlife habitat! Is there no way to re-think
this project in a manner that would reduce the impact on this wetland area?
