Yesterday 12 of us enjoyed a warm, sunny morning at Nisqually. It really was
a great day for a walk!

The refuge is really drying out and the grass is head high in some areas,
but the birds are still there, especially the young of the year.

Highlights included an AMERICAN BITTERN fly by on the way out to McAllister
Creek, a BALD EAGLE eating a starry flounder seen from the Nisqually overlook
and a female BLACK-HEADED GROSBEAK feeding a youngster. That was near the
twin barns.

We also saw a female COMMON MERGANSER with 16 young on the Nisqually River.
They swam right in front of the BALD EAGLE with the flounder. I guess they
knew they were safe. There also was a SPOTTED SANDPIPER along the Nisqually
River.

For the day we saw 35 species and remain at 118 species for the year.

Mammals seen included EASTERN GRAY SQUIRREL and MINK.
