March 1, ALL species of resident birds in my yard, towhees, song sparrows,
dark eyed juncos, chickadees and nuthatches are all involved in nuptial and
territorial behaviors. A pair of juncos chest bumped to decide a terrirorial
line this morning. Honey bees, like most pollinators, respond to
temperature, and will fly for nectar on non-raining days when the temps are
in the low to mid 40's or better. Tree frogs are out and calling tonight
already, and long-toed salamander eggs have obvious embyros wriggling in the
eggs and will probably hatch in the next few days. Rough skinned newts are
migrating to ponds and lakes and dance flies were out this afternoon doing
early season warm ups. A pair of ravens flew around each other making a
goofy sort of quirking tone, one breaking off to power climb several hundred
feet then dive upon the other, chortling and talking the whole time. Its
like the cold weather keep everybody repressed and today they are all out
and bouncing for joy.
