March 1, 2006
The following interesting birds have been reported in Spokane County
during the past week:

There were 4 new county year birds being: WESTERN & MOUNTAIN BLUEBIRDS,
LONG-EARED OWL, and HERRING GULL bringing the group year list to 114.

The first WESTERN BLUEBIRDS were 6 on Tower Mountain Feb 26. Two were on
Tucker Prairie Rd Feb 27 in west Spokane County. Seven were south of Cheney
March 1.

The first MOUNTAIN BLUEBIRDS (#?) were reported Feb 28 on Malloy Prairie Rd
in west Spokane Co.

A LONG-EARED OWL was seen Feb 27 on the Corder ranch near Cheney. They
nested there last year.

An adult HERRING GULL was seen March 1, on West Medical Lake and later on
Medical Lake.

TUNDRA SWANS have been reported from several locations, including Eloika
Lake.

A SHORT-EARED OWL was in SW part of the county March 1, at Mullinix & Martin
Roads. This is the first 2006 report away from the West Plains.

Sadly, a road kill SNOWY OWL was near Sprague Lake Feb 23, just barely in
Lincoln Co. It was a female & probably a first winter bird. This is the
2nd recent road kill for that general area. If you want to see photos, let
me know.

A GREAT HORNED OWL egg was found Feb 18 beneath a Cheney nest.

PINE SISKINS have finally been reported in the Spokane area.

GOLDEN EAGLE reports include one March 1 at Spangle and 1 Feb 16 in Adams
Co, west of Sprague Lake. Either this has been a great year or they are not
as rare as I thought. Please keep reporting them.

VIOLET-GREEN SWALLOWS are back in small numbers along the Spokane River. 3
were in Spokane Valley Feb 25. 12 were near the confluence of the Little
Spokane River Feb 28. The first VG Swallow was at Eloika Lake Feb 15.

KILLDEER numbers are increasing.

Good Birding,
CraigCorder I did not see all these birds.
