Michael,

Last fall I was working in the Umatilla Basin on a 'nitrates and
perchlorates in drinking water' problem out of Hermiston and there is a
big farm there that grows the gourds. I brought back about a dozen
with me on Horizon. We could probably get a great many as I selected
mine from a veritable mountain of gourds. I bet I kept their business
card. IF someone needed to place some more gourds, I could probably
donate mine to the cause since I'm way short of extra time right now
and I doubt I'm close enough to the Lower Duwamish to really have a
chance of tempting them up to 35th in West Seattle, which was my plan.

I'm currently on the Katrina Response out of the Incident Command Post
in Lake Charles, LA. About 14 hrs per day and I have about two more
weeks on this deployment. You should see some of what we're working in
- we've removed thousands of drums of hazardous waste, tanks from
refineries, chlorine tanks, entire chemical tank cars floated in, and
tons of household hazardous waste - everything from thousands of
peoples lives completely washed out into the wetlands on the coast -
I'll show some pictures - I've been getting a lot of helicopter time -
hundreds of contractors, marsh buggies, air boats, collection centers
and the contrast between what we've done and the untouched Wildlife
Refuges is like night and day.

Here is a link to some of the discussion of our challenges with the
refuges

Warmest regards from Lake Charles, If anyone needs any mosquitoes,
cottonmouths or gators, I can meet your needs. The gourds will have to
wait until late March when I get back.
