Just a thought:

The reason I am interested in subspecies is about conservation, not because I am any good at identifying subspecies in the field.

That's what bothers me about Birdlife International(BLI). They seem to ignor the fate of threatened subspecies, as long as the species as a whole is not threatened. The large woodpeckers in Asia (and Latin America?) are examples.

I'm just a neutral observer from Switzerland, so to speak.
