Subject: [Tweeters] Barred Owl on Thornton Creek, Seattle

This morning at 04:30 we heard a Barred Owl hooting from the
Thornton Creek ravine behind our house. It hooted only a few times,
flew up the ravine and hooted a few times more, and that was the last
we heard it. I assume it kept moving. We have heard Barred Owls on
these dates:
21 Mar 98

28 Nov 02

15 Feb-24 Mar 03

11 Dec 03

24 Feb 04

3 Mar 06

There is a clear pattern of early spring appearance and, for the most
part, disappearance, which must be when the birds are on the move,
presumably looking for a mate and/or a breeding territory. If you
live in a wooded area, this is the time of year to leave a window
slightly open! We have heard Barn Owls twice, a Great Horned Owl
once, and no other owls, so Barred is apparently the urban owl around
here.
