I've heard very scary stories about bandidos on the Durango Highway, but I
believe the military has cleaned it up. However, the Durango Highway is a
dangerous place to drive because the truckers make wide, wrong-lane turns on
blind switchback curves at high speeds, and they don't seem to care who is
coming the other way. We always traveled there in a group and stayed at a
little B&B inn, the Villa Blanca, up in the moutains. The food is good, but
you'll listen all night to the deafening sounds of jake-breaks as truckers
coast down the mountain. It's a great place to find flocks of Tufted Jays,
but I wouldn't recommend going there alone. The town of Copala is worth
visiting on the way up from Mazatlan.
