All,

I've been reading these posts with a bit of interest, especially the
"warnings" set forth about bandidos and gangs and such that might interfere with the
pursuit of life birds, etc. How dare they keep us from seeing a Resplendent
Quetzal!! With all these thoughts at hand, allow me to add my buck and a half
(adjusting for inflation).

I worked for a research company a while back and traveled extensively
throughout the United States and it seems that every time I was flying to a city such
as Baltimore or Cleveland, for instance, my fellow passengers always regaled
me with warnings about the city and the crime and the gangs, etc. I never had
problem one in ANY city.

I believe that many of us travel with preconceived ideas about what to
expect, and thereby place undue stress on ourselves to enjoy where we are and what
we might experience. I walk down the street in Bellingham and try to be aware
of my surroundings but I don't walk in fear.

If you have the means to travel to foreign countries to bird, consider how
fortunate you are, and enjoy yourself. At the same time, don't be foolish and
please avoid the Ugly American Syndrome.

Cheers and safe travels (whether to Fir Island or Madagascar),
Joe Meche
