Took my nature explorers class out to Al Borlin Park in monroe yesterday.
While I was teaching them how to use binoculars a red-tail hawk soared
overhead, great practise and good looks. A kingfisher was quickly added as
the second bird on their new bird life lists. The rain kicked in so we took
shelter under a hemlock for the story about Rainbow bird. Right across the
trail, out pops a towhee in full dance mode, scruffing back and forth in the
leaves right in front of our 13 pairs of binculars. Then, in view
technicolor view, the towee unearths a very large earthworm. The kids all
shriek and the towhee tosses the worm back and forth in it bill like a tiny
tiger. Then the worm is put down and the towhee pecks it. This was too much
for one little girl who rushed over, shooed away the bird and rescued the
worm! The kids all felt sorry for the worm, so we carefully hid it under a
stump and wished it well.
