Hi All,

Delia & I went to Tokeland over the weekend, where we birded with Curt & Bobby Pearson Saturday & Sunday.

Birds seen, in order seen,

1. Band Tailed Pigeon (Tokeland, also in West Seattle and in Federal Way on the way)
2. Stellar?s Jay
3. Crow
4. Rock Pigeon
5. Glaucous Winged Gull
6. Red Tailed Hawk
7. Flicker
8. Tree Swallow (Curt & Bobby saw one at Raymond Airport, D& I saw many over Nisqually hdqters)
9. TURKEY VULTURE (Curt & Bobby saw one at Raymond Airport)
10. Belted Kingfisher (Actually this was at the Nisqually on the way)
11. SORA (ditto?it flew quickly from one clump of grass to another and luckily an expert birder happened to be standing by and also saw it & assured/reassured us of the id).
12. Bewick?s Wren
13. Marsh Wren
14. Mallard
15. Hooded Merganser
16. Bufflehead
17. Ring Necked Duck
18. Canada Geese
19. Ruby Crowned Kinglet
20. European Starling
21. Robin
22. Double Crested Cormorant

24. Red Breasted Nuthatch (Curt & Bobby in Tokeland)
25. Shoveler
26. Northern Harrier
27. Brant (Tokeland, plus many at Bottle Beach)
28. Sanderling
29. Dunlin
30. Common Raven
31. Golden Crowned Sparrow
32. Pacific Loon (Tokeland Marina)
33. Western Gull
34. Horned Grebe
35. Western Grebe
36. Winter Wren
37. Surf Scoter
38. Wigeon
39. WILLET (mixed in with the Godwits at the Tokeland Marina)
40. MARBLED GODWIT (One huge tight flock roosting near the Tokeland Marina)
41. LONG BILLED DOWITCHER (3 hiding around Willets at the Tokeland Marina)
42. Mew Gull (Tokeland Marina)
43. Red Breasted Merganser
44. CLARK?S GREBE (reasonably close to the pier at the Tokeland Marina. A Western Grebe swam in the same area for purposes of comparison, either that or because the fishing was good. Nice bright bill, real high white line, a nice looking bird.)
45. Fox Sparrow (5 or 6, 1 singing enthusiastically, in Tokeland)
46. Golden Crowned Kinglet
47. Chestnut Backed Chickadee
48. Song Sparrow
49. Spotted Towhee
50. Black Bellied Plover flock of about 30 at Bottle Beach also
51. Peregrine Falcon (Three)
52. Common Loon (Tokeland and in the Westport Marina)
53. White Winged Scoter
54. Purple Finch (in Tokeland)
55. House Finch
56. LONG BILLED CURLEW one flying by Tokeland
57. RUFOUS HUMMINGBIRD we only encountered one, in Tokeland
58. Bald Eagle (one over Tokeland)
59. Yellow Rumped Warbler (nice flock at Midway)
60. Least Sandpiper (about 12 in Midway, working the ponds in the grass
61. Great Blue Heron (Tokeland & Elk River)
62. Black Capped Chickadee (in Midway)
63. Black Turnstone (about 6 on the rocks in Westport)
64. Pigeon Guillemot (off Westport)
65. Killdeer (in Westport)
66. Western Meadowlark (Curt & Bobby saw one in Westport)
67. Western Sandpiper (a good number mixed with Sanderlings into very large flock of mostly Dunlin at Westport)
68. Semipalmated Plover (a few in the same flock)
69. Merlin (at Bottle Beach, carrying prey that looked like a Dunlin)
70. Red Winged Blackbird (at Bottle Beach)
71. Downy Woodpecker
72. Greater Yellowlegs (Tokeland & John?s River)
73. Wood Duck ( one male at John?s River)
74. Ring Billed Gull (in Aberdeen)


A really nice aspect of the weekend was the ubiquitous sound of PACIFIC TREE FROGS, from Nisqually to John?s River to Tokeland and Westport. It was especially loud at Midway-- what a wonderful sound.

I?m hoping that more info will be posted soon on Tweeters about the Nisqually anti-swallow netting.
