While living in western NY, I remember American Tree Sparrows as THE winter
bird. Meaning when they showed up, like the juncos, winter was really
setting in. Their tinkling call notes as they battled between each other
and the other sparrows for fallen seeds below the bird feeder is a sound I
will always associate with winter. Then, come spring, just before they
departed for areas farther north to breed, we would hear their very musical
and pleasant songs. Quite a treat for the end of winter.
