Our most interesting experience with White Pelicans occurred while we were paddling a canoe down the Wild and Scenic Missouri River between Coal
Banks Landing and the Kipp Recreation Area in Montana. It was a grand eight-day, 108-mile trip in June of 2004, with perfect weather except for one night of thunderstorms. White Pelicans were our constant companions, flying either up or down the river in large flocks or family groups. Occasionally they would gather along the shoreline with young families and just ignore us as we passed by. The river was their territory, and they must have been able to find food in those opaque, muddy waters. We thoroughly enjoyed their company.
