My first White pelicans were at Malheur, at that time the lake was quite
large and my car had gotten stuck in the mud to the point of needed a pull
out. I was hiking back to the paved road, along the lake shore, the sun was
just coming up in the east and a group of pelicans materialized and came in
for a landing not too far away. I remember having both sides of my brain
collide, my awe at the spectacle of these glorious white birds, shining in
the early mornng sun, and counting them, at the same time. I was so
overwhelmed I sat down, in the mud, pulled out my journal and wrote for more
than an hour. When I finally got to the road and got picked up by a friendly
farmer, he noticed my wetness and said, fell in the lake didya?
