Hi Tweeters,

First a funny story. My mom was talking to a neighbor
yesterday. The neighbor knows I like to bird and was
asking my mother about some little birds that really
like her forsythia bush. My mom asked if they come
visit the bush in large groups. The neighbor said yes
and my mom said those are probably bushtits. The
neighbors reply: I didn't know my bush had those.

Last night I heard my first Savannah Sparrow of the
season sing at Kent Ponds, in the field area. It was
so balmy and I could smell the cottonwood leave
sheaths that are popping off the trees. The first day
it truly felt like spring to me. Also of note was a
beautiful male Harrier and a Short-eared Owl. One of
the short-eared owls in this area is a particularly
attractive individual with a very pale facial disc,
really setting off the eyes.

Today at Medina Park noted 4 Great Blue Heron nests
occupied, two in the open cottonwood and two in the
firs. The large nest in the cottonwood appears to be
on eggs already. Ducks of note, at least 2 Eurasian
Wigeon, male Northern Pintail-lovely in the morning
light and a male Green-winged Teal. I also saw a very
pale breasted immature Cooper's Hawk. It was only
when I got close I could see the fine streaking.

On the bus over 520 I saw for the first time the
leucistic Western Grebe that has been reported in
years past. Very pale overall except for a narrow
band of dark grey over the mid back and up the back of
the neck.

Like these longer days a lot!
