I also see time and time again the cute little nestboxes all have posts beneath the entrance "to help the little birdies". The birds for whom these boxes are designed *do not need these*. Sparrows use them to exclude and harrass the desired birds.

There is actually a huge problem right now, with well-intended people buying nestboxes - especially those cute little ones - and putting them up all over their property, and in unmonitored yards, they're mostly providing sites for house sparrows to flourish!
