Hi Scott, Wow! A Purple Martin ? You get a gold star for that one.
That is extremely noteworthy because the first martins were reported
in Sacramento only two days ago, by folks who monitor the bridge
colonies regularly for first arrivals, and I haven't seen any
reports of martins yet on OBOL. This years Sacramento arrival date
of 24 March is later than the previous three years by about two
weeks, thought due the below normal central valley temps since the
beginning of March. Yours is one of a very few reported March
arrivals in WA. And, to the best of my knowledge this is only the
13th report/record of a martin in Eastern Washington (not including
Klickitat County), with only one containing observation of breeding
behaviour, also from Kittitas County in 1978, when martins were
reported using a woodpecker cavity in an aspen at Vantage.

If there are any known White-throated breeding sites around
there, may be worth checking out early and late in the day in case
this martin decides to stick around, as martins have a breeding
association with White-throateds elsewhere in their western range.
