Subject: [Tweeters] Heron, red-tail and a rabbit

Got up early today and hit the road and did a tour of the Skagit flats on my
way to Bellingham. Along Mann road I was stopped and looking at some
handsome green-wing teals from my car when a Great Blue Heron flew up and
landed on the tall grassy edge of a ditch. It then jumped in the air, wings
askew and a rabbit bolted out from underneath where it had landed. Oops. The
heron settled back down, ruffling its feathers as if trying to regain its
composure. The rabbit meanwhile had attracted the attention of a Red-tail
hawk, which flew over and soared in tight circles overhead. I could see the
rabbit, crouched under a thin bit of grass, but the hawk eventually soared
off towards the dike. The rabbit cautiously poked its head out of its scant
cover, checked to be sure the coast was clear, then bolted across an opening
to some thick blackberry vines. The red-tail came back and soared again,
but this time the rabbit was safely ensconced in the comforting thicket.
