Hi, Bryony. I was in London this past December -- not a great time of
year for birding -- but I wanted to share with you how much I enjoyed
watching the many species of exotic waterfowl which live in the large
pond at St. James Park, in the middle of London. I ended up going there
several times. You probably won't appreciate watching people feed bread
to the White Pelicans there -- I educated a couple people about that,
and they do have (not enough) signs -- but you may appreciate being able
to watch them from two feet away.

Although my trip was not geared toward birding, I did have one target
species -- the English Robin. I found my first one at Kew Gardens --
which I'd think would be an excellent place for other birds too, in May.
It's a short train ride from London, in the town of Kew.
