I visited the Royal Botanic Gardens at Kew last June and it was a fine place for birds--English robins, blackbirds, green woodpeckers, blue tits, all kinds of things that were exotic to me.

It's an easy day trip out of London on the underground. Take the District line to the end of the line at the village of Kew, walk through town and into the botanical gardens...

I am going to the UK in May and would like to do some consequential birding. I will rely on public transportation and for the most part be in London and its environs. I have an excellent field guide but no real idea of where to look or what to look for at that time of year.

Any suggestions on urban areas or day trips from London where to look for birds and what I might expect to see?

Any ideas appreciated, and you may contact me off list.
