Mar 29, 2006. The following interesting birds have been reported in Spokane
County during the past week:

There were 6 new county year birds being WHITE-HEADED WOODPECKER, NORTHERN
SHOVELOR, RUDDY DUCK, GREATER YELLOWLEGS, AMERICAN PIPIT, and YELLOW-HEADED
BLACKBIRD bringing the group year list to 129. Check out the
progress at http://www.spokaneaudubon.org/

A WHITE-HEADED WOODPECKER was in Riverside State Park at Nine Mile Falls Mar
9.
A NORTHERN SHOVELOR was at the Peone Prairie wetland Mar 26.
6 RUDDY DUCKS were at Philleo Lake Mar 27.
A GREATER YELLOWLEGS was on Drumheller Rd Mar 28.
An AMERICAN PIPIT was on Drumheller Rd Mar 28.
3 YELLOW-HEADED BLACKBIRDS were at Peone Prairie wetland Mar 28.

A male EURASIAN WIGEON was at Philleo Lake Mar 18. Another was at Peone
Prairie Mar 23. That's at least 7 in the county in March, plus several in
Lincoln & Pend Oreille. The ones south of Spokane are gone now.

There were a few sightings of TURKEY VULTURE.

SANDHILL CRANES were sometimes seen, (often not seen) at Drumheller Rd &
county line SW of Medical Lake.

Late SNOWY OWLS were well reported in Lincoln, Adams & Whitman Co, but none
in Spokane Co. (One birder saw 6 Snowy Owls Mar 24.)

An influx of ROUGH-LEGGED HAWKS was noted Mar 28 in the SW part of the
county with 7 seen in a small area. (2 juv & 1 dark-phase).

Mar 24, 2 SHARP-TAILED GROUSE were seen in a new area in Lincoln Co, east of
the freeway. Take the Fishtrap exit & go to where the road goes under the
railroad tracks. Later attempts to locate failed. If anybody knows of
previous grouse sightings for this area, please let me know.

Lincoln Co, CHIPPING SPARROWS have been seen Mar 21 in Edwall and Mar 22 at
Reardon. I assume very early.

Good Birding,
