While I waited for an appointment last week, I browsed a copy of the May
2006 issue of National Geographic. In it was an article about oil and gas
development in Alaska. And, the article included a beautifully-prepared map
of Alaska that showed locations of wildlife, migratory routes, and breeding
areas -- along with locations of oil and gas wells that had been drilled for
development or exploration.

I was stunned to see how much of Alaska's north slope has been leased for
oil and gas development. And, I noticed that ANWR is perhaps the only
remaining untouched area on the north slope. When I saw that, I realized
the importance and urgency of saving ANWR.
