Actually, Windermere is taking a very large loss on this unless they can convince the City of Seattle to reimburse their expenses. Windermere really is taking the high road. This world would be a far better place if more companies were as genuinely concerned for and connected to their communities as they are.

...now maybe they'll donate all the fireworks dollars to wildlife conservation and become real heroes...

Big News, Big big news!

Windermere has decided to cancel the entire event out of concern for wildlife and the nesting eagles.

This is the best possible decision! Until last week, Windermere was completely unaware of the environmental concerns. And most unfortunately, they had never been advised by the City on these potential issues. The moment it was brought to their attention last week, they were as concerned as we were, and it was obvious
they wanted to take the high road and do the right thing. And they have!

Thank you Dennis Paulson, Connie Sidles, Marc Hoffman, Ben Schroeter, and all of you on Tweeters who helped to make this happen. And thank you TWEETERS!! If it wasn't for this listserve, we never could have gotten the word out in the first place, and it's very possible the event would be moving forward.

Announcement from Windermere, posted just minutes ago: http://www.windermere.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=about.pressReleaseDetail&prID

Quick recap
The City of Seattle Special Events Committee approved a permit for an 18-minute fireworks display in Union Bay, the area we know as Montlake Fill. This is similar in scale to the Gasworks Park display for the annual July 4th display. It was going to be huge! The City did not notify the residents and absolutely no public comment was involved in this decision. Amazingly, the Special Events Committee has never reviewed for environmental impacts.

Virginia Swanson in Special Events, who chaired yesterday's emergency meeting, opened up the process for reconsideration. It was apparent she had done her environmental homework and she allowed the public to speak on this, as well. She had originally taken the position that the public may not be able to speak. After the meeting, she told us that going forward, the Special Events Committee will consult with wildlife officials early in the process for future Special Events permit applications. That's a great step forward for the City and we hope it leads to better overall environmental review policy across the board. We want to make sure that this indeed happens.
