May 7, 2006. The following interesting birds have been reported in
Spokane County during the past week:

There were 9 new county year birds being: LEWIS'S WOODPECKER, WILSON'S
PHALAROPE, LEAST SANDPIPER, BLACK TERN, HAMMOND'S FLYCATCHER, WARBLING
VIREO, SEMIPALMATED PLOVER, SWAINSON'S THRUSH AND WHITE-FACED IBIS bringing
the group year list to 187. Check out the progress at
http://www.spokaneaudubon.org/

A rare LEWIS'S WOODPECKER was near Spangle May 3.
The first WILSON'S PHALAROPE and LEAST SANDPIPERS were near Spangle May 3.
Others have been seen since.
BLACK TERNS returned May 4.
The first HAMMOND'S FLYCATCHER was at Iller Creek May 5.
The first WARBLING VIREO was at Peone Prairie's Madison Road May 5.
Two rare SEMIPALMATED PLOVERS were SW of Cheney 2.1 miles down Lance Hill
Road May 7. They may still be there.
The first SWAINSON'S THRUSH was singing in a south hill Spokane yard May 7.
A very rare WHITE-FACED IBIS was between Four Lakes and Cheney on Jensen
Road May 7. It stayed for a couple hours, but was seen flying away (not
flushed). If anybody knows of another Spokane Co record, please let me
know.

Last report's Western Grebe has been retracted because it likely was the
Clark's Grebe from West Medical Lake. The CLARK'S GREBE was seen again on
May 4th on the north end of West Medical Lake. Also there was a HORNED
GREBE.

Shorebird migration finally got going.
A total of 9 SOLITARY SANDPIPERS have been seen since April 26 with 5 seen
May 3 near Cheney on the Cheney/Spangle Road.

Four BONAPARTE'S GULLS were at Philleo Lake May 3. Seven were at Silver
Lake May 4.

A 1st year GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GOOSE was at the north end of Medical Lake
May 4. It appears to be the small Tundra race.

A rare SNOW GOOSE has been west of Cheney at Salnave & Graham Roads April
27 thru at least May 1. This is the 2nd Snow Goose for the county year.

The GREAT-TAILED GRACKLE at the Liberty Lake golf course was unreported.
Try the corner of Molter & Valley Way.

There's a significant migration going on now. Get out there & enjoy it.
