Richard Hendrick and I, Meredith Spencer stopped at Duley Lake in Okanogan
Co. today (DeLorme p. 101, 4 1/2 and C) and found one magnificent shore
bird: Hudsonian Godwit. It was actively feeding, never flew and never
called. It was taller and larger than a Greater Yellowlegs. The bright
chestnut sides were very obvious, as was the white eye line. Long,
slightly upcurved orange bill, with a black tip. Black legs. Some of the
markings on the back shone like gold when the light hit it just
right. There is a side road at the south end of the lake where you can
drive in a little closer to the water. At the lake were several ducks, as
well as 10 Sandhill Cranes. Meredith Spencer, Bridgeport,
Wash. 98813 P.S. We had good looks, but it was too far away for a photo.
