Hi Folks:
It was quiet at the 216th Ponds in the Kent Valley this morning. There was
one Killdeer in each pond. These ponds are on 216th St, near a traffic
circle on 42nd Ave and 216th. You reach it by traveling from the light at
42nd Ave and Orillia Rd.
I decided to go to RIVERVIEW MARSH on Frager Rd. I drove east on 216th
toward the Green River, and south on Frager Road to the road closure which
is next to the footbridge that crosses over to Kent Ponds and the Power Line
Trail. This would be about the 22300 block on Frager Road. I parked on
Frager and walked past the road closed sign to the
pedestrian section of Frager. I continued south about 1/2 block, and turned
right onto a trail that is almost under the power lines. This trail is
marked no trespassing, but the public uses it, and we have never had a
problem walking on it. The trail is about 1/2 mile long, and goes back
through deciduous woods and around a nice-size pond. I could hear a Yellow
Warbler. Gold Finches and House Finches were singing. Back at the back of
the pond, the trail loops around to the left. It is a U-shaped trail and
eventually comes back out to the road. At the back (west) of the pond the
trail goes up in elevation, and you have a great view of the whole pond.
Two GREAT EGRETS in breeding plumage were standing across the pond on the
little dock at the far (east) side of the pond. Wow! There was also an
AMERICAN COOT (we don't usually see those this time of year), and a couple
of Pied-billed Grebes. I continued on around and along the south part of
the trail I saw and heard a Wilson's Warbler, and heard a Virginia Rail, a
Warbling Vireo, and a Blk-headed Grosbeak. It was about noon.
Yours, Carol Schulz
