On Thursday, May 11, I led an East Lake Washington Audubon Birdathon Trip to
Scatter Creek, south of Olympia. Even though we had a few rain sprinkles we
saw some great birds. At the North Unit we saw American Kestrel, Purple Finch
feeding in the trail, Common Yellowthroat, Wilson's and Orange-crowned
Warbler, Pileated Woodpecker, American Goldfinch, Chipping Sparrow, and Killdeer.
Several Cassin's Finch were heard and seen along with a Western Scrub-jay and
male Western Tanager. A couple of Black-throated Gray Warblers were heard but
wouldn't show themselves. As soon as we entered the South Unit, we saw a
Western Bluebird perched atop the outhouse. A Turkey Vulture soared overhead.
Red-breasted Sapsucker gave everyone good views while a Great Blue Heron and
Belted Kingfisher flew along Scatter Creek. A trip to the Mima Mounds included
Brown Creeper, Northern Harrier and Ring-necked Pheasant. By the end of the
day, we'd enjoyed at least 50 bird species in addition to two Coyote and a Mule
Deer.
