Hi Roger and Tweeters:
Yesterday morning there was a fledgling Steller's Jay perched (I should say
hunched) in a dense evergreen tree in my yard. The adult was perched
nearby. The young bird was downy gray w/ a few light blue feathers. The
bird was about 1/2 as big as the adult, had a short tail, and a little
crest. The bill was gray. There is no nest in this tree. I saw the
fledgling hop but not fly. I think it came from somewhere else in the yard.
This morning an Osprey (a new yard bird) circled over our suburban
neighborhood calling loudly. It got all the Steller's Jays and other birds
in the neighborhood excited and calling.
I wonder if Steller's Jays nest before Scrub Jays in W WA?
And then there is the story of Sam Agnew in Spanaway near Tacoma. He gets
both Steller's and Scrub Jays in his yard and they nest there. About 5
years ago he had a breeding pair of jays: a Scrub Jay, and a Steller's Jay.
The hybrid fledglings looked like Steller's Jays.
