Hello Tweeters,

This evening around 7:30 I saw a Semipalmated Sandpiper at the Montlake Fill
in Seattle. It was in the ?shoveler? pond, the northeast-most pond, feeding
with 5 Western and 2 Least Sandpipers. I watched it for about 15 minutes,
feeding on the mud and shallow water of the pond. It was much browner
overall than the Westerns, with a shorter bill, chevrons barely reaching
down the sides of the breast, and none of the reddish color on the
scapulars, crown, and auriculars.

Also at the Fill were two Mourning Doves, which I?ve not seen there before.

On Wednesday evening, I watched a single Short-billed Dowitcher stop briefly
in the main pond, then move on. There is also a pair of Virginia Rails with
at least two young hanging around the vegetation along the creek west of the
parking lot. With the Soras that are also at the fill (in the southwest
corner of the loop trail), it?s a great place to see rails.

Good birding,

Matt Dufort

Seattle, WA
