Marian,

You are correct about the red on the back of the head indicating a Yellow Shafted Flicker, so there are two possible explanations.
1) You had a Yellow Shafted Flicker in your yard. They don't occur very often out here, but it does happen.
2. You spotted an intergrade. They seem to be showing up more and more lately. It would be interesting to keep an eye out for it to see if it has red-orange or yellow underwings.
