May 13, 2006. The following interesting birds have been reported in Spokane
County during the past week:

There were 12 new county year birds being: AMERICAN AVOCET, SPOTTED
SANDPIPER, WESTERN SANDPIPER, BAIRD'S SANDPIPER, LONG-BILLED DOWITCHER,
VAUX'S SWIFT, WESTERN WOOD-PEWEE, GRASSHOPPER SPARROW, GOLDEN-CROWNED
SPARROW, BLACK-HEADED GROSBEAK, BULLOCK'S ORIOLE and LAZULI BUNTING bringing
the group year list to 199. What will be 200? Check out the progress at

A rare AMERICAN AVOCET was at Peone Prairie May 10. So far it has not been
seen again, but it is a big area.
The first SPOTTED SANDPIPER was on lower Mt Spokane May 8.
The first & only 2 WESTERN SANDPIPERS were at Peone Prairie May 8.
The first & only 2 BAIRD'S SANDPIPERS were at Peone Prairie May 9.
The first 15 LONG-BILLED DOWITCHERS were at Philleo Lake May 8. There were
150 there today May 13.
The only 2 VAUX'S SWIFTS reported were near Deep Creek May 11.
The first WESTERN WOOD-PEWEE just arrived near Cheney May 13.
The first 2 GRASSHOPPER SPARROWS were at the Little Spokane River area May
8.
A rare GOLDEN-CROWNED SPARROW was at the Spangle Academy May 12.
BLACK-HEADED GROSBEAKS returned May 9 to Tower Mountain & the Little Spokane
River.
The first BULLOCK'S ORIOLE was in north Spokane May 9.
The first LAZULI BUNTING was at Silver Hill May 11.
The rare (3rd county record) WHITE-FACED IBIS was seen May 7 through May 9
near Four Lakes.
The 2 rare SEMIPALMATED PLOVERS were SW of Cheney May 7 through May 10.

I thought GREATER & LESSER YELLOWLEGS numbers were low this spring. I only
saw 9 LESSER & 20 GREATER. Compare that to the 9 SOLITARY SANDPIPERS I saw.
Yellowlegs are supposed to be common in spring in Spokane County.

Only one winter plumaged BONAPARTE'S GULL was at Silver Lake today, May 13.

Amazingly dodging fishermen, a CLARK'S GREBE remains at West Medical Lake,
May 13.

The GREAT-TAILED GRACKLE at the Liberty Lake golf course continues. Try the
corner of Molter & Valley Way.

A hard-to-find LEWIS'S WOODPECKER was along Gordon Road near Deep Creek May
11. Another 2 LEWIS'S WOODPECKERS were found May 13 in the West Plains on
Stroup Road 0.9 mile south of Thorpe Road. Both locations may have a nest.

A BARN OWL was at Turnbull NWR May 11 where they are rare.
