Hi, Marian:

I used to live in Reardan (about 25 miles west of Spokane) and had great
habitat so many birds nested there. I had a yellow-shafted male appear for a few
weeks in the spring. A month or so later I had a red-shafted female bring her
young to the suet blocks. One was a male who looked like a red-shafted
except for the red crescent on the back of his head. Another had red-shafted
coloring but his malar stripes were a strange color...almost looked like black
stippling, and third female was, outwardly, a regular red-shafted. It was an
interesting lesson in intergrade possibilities.
