Happy Mother's Day Tweeters-

What a beautiful morning to sit in the back yard and enjoy the sun, birds and a steaming Mocha.

The Male Anna's Hummingbird that has claimed my back yard as his territory has two favorite perches. One is a Wild Cherry snag and the other a dying Cascara tree. This morning a Spotted Towhee decided to try proclaiming his territory by using the Cherry tree. (I don't usually see Towhees up that high) He would belt out his song and another Towhee a couple of houses down the street would answer. Back and forth they called, each proclaiming, "This is my space." All this time the Anna's was perched in the Cascara. He decided that he didn't like someone else using HIS tree. So he dive bombed the Towhee, the Towhee quieted down but did not leave, after a few minutes he began singing again. Again the Anna's went after him, he quieted down, then started up again. This happened 4 times. Finally the Towhee moved on. Not more than five minutes later a brilliant red House Finch landed on the top of the Cherry snag and began belting out his rendition of "This Is My Country". The Anna's responded to him the same way. It only took two attacks to drive the House Finch to a lower bush.
I have seen this Anna's take on everything from Chickadees to Crows. Nothing intimidates him.
