I had a problem with rats once. Since I also have chipmunks, creeping voles
and douglas squirrels who feed from the bird seed fallout I used a live
trap, set at night. I have a five gallon bucket filled with water and when I
caught a rat I just drowned it, then flipped it untouched from the trap into
the brush behind my house for the coyotes, raccoons or whatever to scavenge.
Killed 4 rats and then caught no more for 2 weeks. Haven't seen one since.
