My grandfather taught me about the things you see when you sit still. He used
to sit on his folding stool next to the front porch, wearing his trademark
pith helmet. He'd sprinkle a little bird seed on the porch a few feet away and
just sit back and wait. Before too long, he'd have Cardinals, titmice, and
Bluejays practically eating out of his hand.
He often took me to the woods near our home and showed me how to "pick out a
good tree" to sit and lean against and just wait. We talked quietly, if at
all, and saw lots of critters by just sitting still. Even though the birds were
good, the armadillos and snakes were the best....depending on the kind of
snake, that is.
Sitting still isn't for everyone, but I find that I can do it now, better
than ever!
